Frequently Asked Questions

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between a screen or image’s width and height, expressed as W:H (e.g., 16:9). It determines the shape of the image — wide, square, or tall.

Divide width and height by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For example, 1920×1080: GCD = 120, so 1920÷120 : 1080÷120 = 16:9. Our aspect ratio calculator does this instantly.

16:9 is the standard for HD video, YouTube, most TVs, and computer monitors. 4:3 is traditional TV format. 21:9 is ultrawide cinema format. 9:16 is the vertical format used for smartphone stories/reels.

: If ratio is 16:9 and width is 1920px: Height = 1920 × (9÷16) = 1080px. If height is known, multiply by (width ratio ÷ height ratio). Our calculator finds missing dimensions automatically.

Instagram supports: 1:1 (square, 1080×1080), 4:5 (portrait, 1080×1350), and 16:9 (landscape, 1080×608). For Reels and Stories: 9:16 (1080×1920).

Modern smartphones typically use 19.5:9, 20:9, or 21:9 aspect ratios (often marketed as 6.67:3 or similar). Older phones used 16:9. The taller ratios allow larger screens in narrower form factors.

Aspect ratio itself doesn’t affect quality, but using the wrong ratio causes letterboxing (black bars), pillarboxing, or stretching/cropping that can reduce perceived quality and visual appeal.
